LOCAL FOCUS: EAR CANDY RECORDS

Ear Candy Records was born six years ago, stemming from a lifelong love of music. I am Werner Schulze and I have been collecting music, especially vinyl records, since 1982.

Both my parents were always in some way involved in music. My late father was a sound engineer for the SABC, and later self-employed in the same industry. He could also play several instruments.

My mother played, amongst others, the piano and flute, and was a primary school music teacher.

I grew up with different genres of music, but got stuck with the oldies, such as Elvis, The Beatles, Cliff Richard, etc. This later evolved to more modern music, such as the ’80s as well as louder music like hard rock, etc.

I have been collecting records ever since my mother gave me my first Elvis Presley record.

I have gone through the whole CD era and into the digital age, still collecting vinyl records.

I never planned on becoming a dealer of vinyl records, until I received a very large collection from which I kept a select few for myself. Feeling too guilty to just “dump” the ones that I didn’t want, I decided to take a chance and started advertising on local Facebook groups.

I soon developed a good name in the business, and my hobby rapidly grew into a source of extra income.

In July 2023 another dealer I and started our own vinyl fair, which later saw the start of a second fair. When that partnership ended, I started a new, much bigger vinyl fair, called the Pretoria East Vinyl Fair, which has been running for almost two years and is regarded as one of the leading vinyl fairs in not only Pretoria, but also in Gauteng.

Our fairs are often attended by others in the industry, and even some local musicians visit is from time to time.

Ear Candy Records is a small, one owner business with the focus on providing top quality vinyl records to my customers, delivering prompt, efficient service on online orders, and mostly, having fun and enjoying the music.

Ear Candy Records has a well-known presence on various Facebook groups, and I am also a founding member and admin of my own group, Vinyl Inc SOUTH AFRICA.

Cinema Architects Open Day, 15 November – Ear Candy Records will be participating in this exciting open day, and will be the only seller of new and pre-owned vinyl records on the day. Visitors can also look forwards to demonstrations and examples of cleaning devices, including an ultrasonic cleaner and Spin Doctor.
